AssamAsam Sahitya Sabha Unveils Plans for Museum Showcasing Rare Replicas of Historic Assamese Literary Works

In a significant development for Assamese literature in 2024, the Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) is embarking on the creation of a literary and cultural museum in Jorhat, Upper Assam.

Asam Sahitya Sabha Unveils Plans for Museum

This unique museum is poised to house a replica of the original version of the first Assamese book ever printed, ‘Dharmapustak,’ a translation of the Holy Bible. The authentic copy of this literary gem is presently safeguarded at the British Library in London.

At an estimated cost of approximately Rs 5 crore, the forthcoming museum aims to showcase a faithful reproduction of the 864-page ‘Dharmapustak.’ The replica will include scanned pages mirroring those found in the original version, which ASS president Surjya Hazarika revealed has been brought to Assam to finalize the creation of this invaluable treasure for Assamese literature.

The original ‘Dharmapustak’ holds historical significance as it was initially printed by Baptist missionary William Carey in 1813 and translated into Assamese by Atmaram Sarma of Assam. Printed in Srirampur, Bengal, the first edition was not widely available in Assam but was preserved at the British Library. Hazarika expressed that this initiative would provide a clear insight into the linguistic nuances of the Assamese language during that era.

Furthermore, Hazarika disclosed that the literary body has also secured a replica of the illustrated ‘Kirtan Ghosa,’ originally penned in Brajawali, an immortal creation of Srimanta Sankardeva. This additional exhibit adds another layer of cultural richness to the museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the artistic and literary heritage of Assam.

The ASS’s endeavor to establish this museum underscores a commitment to preserving and showcasing the rich literary and cultural heritage of Assam, providing a platform for enthusiasts and scholars alike to delve into the historical roots of Assamese literature.
