The Assam Government has officially announced the inclusion of ‘Ali-Aye-Ligang,’ a significant festival of the Mishing community, as a holiday in 10 districts of the state. A notification issued by the General Administration of the Assam Government specifies that February 14, 2024, the day on which the festival is observed, will be a designated holiday in the identified districts.

The 10 districts where the holiday will be observed are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli, and Charaideo, as outlined in the official notification.

The notification further states that state government offices and educational institutions within the jurisdiction of these districts will remain closed on February 14, 2024, in celebration of the ‘Ali-Aye-Ligang’ festival.

“The Governor of Assam is pleased to declare a holiday on 14th February 2024 within the jurisdiction of 10 (ten) nos. of District viz Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli & Charaideo in connection with the observance of the upcoming ‘ALI-AYE-LIGANG’ festival. All State Govt. Offices, educational institutions, etc. within the jurisdiction of the above-mentioned 10 (ten) Districts will remain closed on 14th February 2024 on account of this holiday,” reads the notification.

‘Ali-Aye-Ligang’ is a traditional agricultural festival celebrated by the Mishing community of Assam, marking the beginning of the sowing season. The festival is characterized by vibrant cultural performances, rituals, and feasting, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Mishing community.

This move by the Assam Government reflects a recognition of the cultural diversity within the state and a commitment to promoting inclusivity by acknowledging and celebrating the festivals of various communities. The declaration of a holiday allows residents in the specified districts to actively participate in the festivities and promotes a sense of cultural unity and understanding among the people of Assam.
