Addressing border disputes
The meeting, which was held at the Circle office in Gumto, Papum Pare district, was attended by representatives from various sectors. Gumto Circle Officer Afa Phassang, who also attended the meeting, spoke to the media, stating that the gathering provided an opportunity for participants to update one another on the status of the border dispute, focusing on the importance of upholding the status quo on both sides. Phassang further added that the goal of the gathering was to ensure that there is no violations of the status quo occur, as seen in other regions in the past.
He emphasized the importance of keeping things as they are and preventing any violations, as had happened in other regions before. Phassang also highlighted that regular communication with Assam was key to avoiding conflicts, especially in winter when people in the area tend to clear land in the forest.
Ongoing Efforts to Foster Dialogue
This meeting in Gumto is just one of many discussions organized by the Papum Pare Border People’s Forum (PPDBPF). Similar meetings have already been held in other parts of the Papum Pare district, such as Kakoi, and more are planned for the near future. According to PPDBPF President Nabam Akin Hina, these meetings are an effort to understand the concerns of local communities and ensure everyone is on the same page in addressing the border disputes.
Background of the Border Disputes
The border disputes between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have been ongoing for years, with both states claiming parts of the same land. These disputes often lead to tensions in the affected areas. The recent meetings, including one chaired by Urban Affairs Minister Balo Raja on October 8, are part of efforts to resolve the issue through dialogue and collaboration. The new regional committee, formed after the recent elections, is working to keep communication open between all parties involved.
The Need for Better Coordination
Akin Hina stressed the importance of keeping everyone informed and preventing any miscommunication. He pointed out that better coordination between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam is needed, especially when it comes to activities like patrolling the border or visits by officials from both states. If both sides are informed in advance, trust can be maintained, and potential conflicts can be avoided.
