In a significant milestone achieved by Mission Smile’s Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (GC4), 25,000 cleft lip and palate surgeries has been completed by the centre. GC4 has served as a ray of light, giving hundreds of kids and families in the area new smiles and bright futures.
GC4’s Historic 25000th Surgery Marks New Chapter
On October 31, 2024, Baby Ligang Pegu of Piyang Village from Silapathar block of Dhemaji District underwent the historic 25,000th surgery, ushering in a new era in the centre’s history of providing free, excellent cleft treatment. By offering necessary treatments at no cost, GC4 has emerged as the go-to option for families dealing with the difficulties of raising a kid with a cleft condition. This accomplishment highlights how Mission Smile, the Assam government, and the National Health Mission (NHM) Assam formed a special public-private partnership (PPP) in 2010 through a Memorandum of Understanding, which has enabled access to comprehensive cleft care throughout the region.
A Tribute to the Dedicated Team
One of the foundation’s original members, Ranjit Barthakur, remarked on this milestone and thanked GC4’s outstanding staff, saying: “This milestone is a testament to the tireless dedication of our surgeons, anesthesiologists, staff, international and national volunteers.” Every surgery is a fresh start for a child and their family, and every success fortifies our determination to offer everyone in need life-changing medical care.
Comprehensive Care and Community Outreach
The work of GC4 extends beyond surgery. The Center provides comprehensive care that lessens the stigma frequently connected to cleft problems by emphasizing early intervention, regular follow-up, and community engagement. GC4 prepares families for their child’s life-changing journey by assisting them in accessing essential care through awareness campaigns and pre-screening camps.
Global Recognition for Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma
According to a press release, on November 14, as we commemorate 25000 safe surgeries in GC4, we will award Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma the Global Honor in Cleft Care in appreciation of his crucial role in helping Mission Smile reach this milestone.
