India is all set to celebrate its maiden National Space Day with the theme “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga”. The Union Government announced this to honour the land mark achievement of Chandrayaan-3 and India’s prowess in space and aeronautics field.

Significance of National Space Day

August 23 signifies India’s achievement of a historic milestone with the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the Lunar Pole. India became the fourth nation in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon and the first to land near the south pole of the lunar surface. It also signifies the dedication and hard work of ISRO’s scientists and engineers .

Inspiration for the youths and future prospects

National Space day aims to inspire the youths of India to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and become the part of India’s space and aeronautical programs.
ISRO has launched various projects and initiatives on the occasion of National Space Day. One of the unique initiative is “Space on Wheels”. ISRO signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this project with a prominent science organization Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA). The primary goal of this project to promote scientific knowledge and awareness through mobile exhibition buses that will travel to various universities and colleges during National Space Day celebration.
ISRO launched another program as “Space Tutors” to promote space education and raise awareness about space applications and activities. 120 registered Space Tutors under ISRO will conduct community outreach events such as exhibitions, quizzes and talks across India.
ISRO has also launched various programs including Bharathiya Hackathon and Robotics Challenge with the tag line ”Let’s Build a Space Robot”.

Celebration of National Space Day at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi

National Space Day celebration, followed by two-day grand event with a series of panel discussions, high profile sessions, important announcements and a vibrant cultural program at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This historic celebration of National Space Day,2024 will be streamed live on various broadcasting platforms.

Chandrayaan -3

Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate successfull landing and roving on Lunar surface. This mission was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhrapradesh. On August 23,2023 successful soft landing of Vikram Lander and deployment of the Pragyan Rover on the southern Polar region of Lunar surface , India created history being the first Country to land near the southern region of the moon. The landing site was named as Shiv Shakti Point.

National Space Day recognizes remarkable achievements of the Nation towards space exploration and highlights the advancements in space technology. This day is dedicated to inspiring youths and future generations and to promote national pride and unity.
