Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma provided a promising update on the construction of the Jorhat-Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra River, stating that the project is advancing as planned and is anticipated to be dedicated to the public by April 2026.
During an inspection of the construction site on November 28, Sarma revealed that 20% of the bridge’s construction has been completed, and there are expectations to achieve 35% progress before the onset of the rainy season.
“We also expect to commence the construction of approach roads on both sides, with an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore, starting from 2024. By April 2026, we anticipate the completion of the entire project, marking a significant milestone for the people,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He emphasized the strategic timing of initiating the approach road construction to ensure the seamless connectivity of the bridge.
The Jorhat-Majuli bridge is poised to become a vital link between the two districts, fostering improved communication and facilitating increased tourist influx in Sattra Nagari, Majuli. Once operational, the bridge is expected to open up new opportunities for economic development and cultural exchange.
In addition to announcing the progress, Chief Minister Sarma issued directives to the concerned officials overseeing the construction to adhere to the stipulated timeline. The timely completion of the project is crucial not only for enhancing connectivity but also for minimizing disruptions caused by weather conditions, particularly during the rainy season.
The envisioned bridge holds significant promise for the region, addressing long-standing connectivity challenges and bolstering the socio-economic landscape of Jorhat and Majuli. The Assam government’s commitment to the project underscores its dedication to infrastructure development, fostering regional growth, and enhancing the overall quality of life for the residents of the state.
