Discovery of Submerged Seamounts
In a groundbreaking study, NASA-funded scientists have identified approximately 100,000 previously unknown underwater mountains on Earth’s ocean floor. Utilizing advanced technology and data from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, developed in collaboration with the French space agency CNES, researchers have meticulously mapped marine regions, revealing formations shaped by tectonic activity over millennia. These seamounts play a crucial role in influencing ocean currents, heat distribution, and marine ecosystems. Despite this advancement, only about 25% of the ocean floor has been explored, highlighting the vastness yet to be discovered.
Addressing Space Waste: The LunarRecycle Challenge
NASA has launched the “LunarRecycle Challenge,” aiming to find sustainable solutions for managing human waste during space missions. Historically, astronauts left 96 bags of waste on the lunar surface during the Apollo missions to reduce spacecraft weight and facilitate the return of lunar samples. With upcoming long-duration missions like Artemis on the horizon, NASA is offering up to $3 million for innovative methods to process and recycle these wastes, transforming them into useful products for scientific and exploratory activities in space. This initiative underscores NASA’s commitment to sustainable space exploration.
Asteroid Observations and Planetary Defense
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured images of asteroid 2024 YR4, a space rock that initially raised concerns due to a 3% chance of impacting Earth in 2032. Subsequent observations have since reduced that probability to nearly zero, although there remains a slight chance it could collide with the moon. The asteroid, which approaches Earth roughly every four years, measures about 200 feet (60 meters) in diameter and is the smallest object observed by the Webb telescope. This data collection offers valuable insights that can aid in identifying and evaluating threats from similar near-Earth objects in the future.
Upcoming Celestial Events: Meteor Showers
April 2025 promises a celestial spectacle with two overlapping meteor showers: the Lyrids and the Eta Aquarids. The Lyrids, originating from Comet Thatcher, will be visible between April 17 and 26, peaking on April 21-22 with around 10 to 20 meteors per hour. Simultaneously, the Eta Aquarids, derived from Halley’s Comet, will be active from April 20 to May 21, peaking on May 3-4 with up to 50 meteors per hour. Stargazers are encouraged to find locations away from city lights to fully enjoy these displays.
Advancements in Space Missions: TRACERS
NASA is preparing for the launch of the Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS) mission, aimed at studying the origins of the solar wind and its interaction with Earth’s magnetosphere. Scheduled for no earlier than April 13, 2025, TRACERS will consist of two identically instrumented spacecraft observing solar particles interacting with Earth’s magnetic field in the northern cusp region. This mission seeks to enhance our understanding of space weather phenomena and their potential impact on Earth.
