In a shocking incident that unfolded at a relief camp located in Imphal East District of Manipur, an elderly woman aged 61 years allegedly took the extreme step on Monday. Police officials have confirmed this tragic incident that reportedly took place around 4 PM. The woman ended her life inside a prefabricated house at Sawombung in the Imphal East district.
Woman takes extreme step, deceased identified
The woman who took ended her life has been identified as Amusana Thiyam. The 61 year old woman belonged to Leitanpokpi village in Imphal East district. She had been taking shelter in the relief camp at Imphal East since October 2023 after being displaced by the ongoing ethnic conflict.
Insights from Police Officials
As per information provided by the police officials, the family members of the deceased woman were not present at the time of the tragic incident. Reportedly, her husband went out of the camp to pick up their granddaughter and her son was out of station for work.
Case registered
The police officials have registered a case of unnatural death. The body of the deceased has been sent to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital to conduct a post-mortem examination.

An inmate in the camp voiced concern over the fate of displaced people in violence-hit Manipur, particularly the old and weak. For many, the loss of their homes is not just a material loss but a blow to their sense of identity, dignity and belonging. The plight of the displaced people in the state is a humanitarian crisis that needs to be intervened at the earliest.
