SM Khan, a retired Indian Information Service Officer and former Press Secretary to late President APJ Abdul Kalam died on Sunday at the age of 67. Khan, who took his last breath at a private hospital in Saket, Delhi left behind his wife and three children. According to his family, his burial and last rites will be performed in his hometown Khurja in Uttar Pradesh on Monday afternoon.

SM Khan’s Life and Career

SM Khan was born on June 15, 1957, at Khurja in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh. He did his LLB and then LLM from Aligarh Muslim University. He also won the Chancellor’s Gold Medal at the university . Later, Khan pursued a degree in economics from the  University of Wales.

SM Khan was also a member of the Aligarh Muslim University Court and was appointed by the President of India as his nominee to the Executive Council of the AMU. He was also  the Director of Jamia Hamdard Residential Coaching Academy.

SM Khan’s Legacy

According to a PTI story, SM Khan, an IIS officer from the 1982 batch, was a well-known member of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), holding the position of longest-serving information officer from 1989 to 2002.

He became the public face of CBI during his term. During high-profile cases, such as the Bofors affair, stock market scams, and other white-collar crimes, he regularly spoke to the media.

Khan was named the late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s press secretary following his lengthy tenure with the CBI. After his term with the President, Khan held a  prestigious position as the Director General (News) at Doordarshan. During his term, he  covered prestigious events like the National Film Awards and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

He served as the Director of the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) and represented India at the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals.

SM Khan was elected a Trustee of the India Islamic Cultural Centre in 2014 and Vice President in 2019. He worked to promote mutual harmony and understanding in the country through this institution. He had a deep association with Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

SM Khan wrote his first book on the People’s President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in which he shares his experiences with Kalam during and post presidency.
