Vivek Ramaswamy to lead Department of Government Efficiency alongside Elon Musk

InternationalVivek Ramaswamy to lead Department of Government Efficiency alongside Elon Musk

In a significant move hinting a strong Trump 2.0 administration, the newly elected President of  the United States has announced the formation of a new department called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). President Trump has chosen Indian origin Executive Vivek Ramaswamy and entrepreneur Elon Musk to lead this newly formed government. The duo will work together to streamline the government, reduce unnecessary regulations and cut wasteful spending in the second Trump administration.

Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk appointed as Head of DOGE

Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur, has been a vocal critic of government bureaucracy. Ramaswamy, who previously made headlines for his critiques of corporate America’s approach to social issues, is expected to bring his experience in private-sector management and his deep understanding of government regulation to the new role.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is known for his outspoken views on government regulation and inefficiency. In his confirmation of the appointment on X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people.” Musk’s involvement in the new department has already sparked considerable attention, partly because of his status as one of the most influential tech figures in the world.

Trump’s announcement also pointed to the symbolic nature of the appointment, noting that the work of the new department is expected to be completed by July 4, 2026 — the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Trump believes that a more efficient and less bureaucratic government would be a fitting way to celebrate this milestone in American history.

The Mission of DOGE

As per the statement of the US President, the new department of the government, DOGE is “the Manhattan Project of our time”. His statement signaled the government’s effort during World War II to develop atomic bomb. Trump’s mission is to overtake federal operations and eliminate the ineffiencies and over-regulations. Musk and Ramaswamy will be reforming government agencies to reduce bureaucracy, cut down on wasteful expenditures and remove excessive rules that obstruct business and innovation.

The new department is anticipated to focus on bringing private-sector practices to the government, aiming for more streamlined operations, reduced paperwork, and a government that is less intrusive and more efficient in serving the Americans.

Dogecoin and Public Reaction

DOGE, is actually connected to Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that Musk has heavily endorsed in the past. The cryptocurrency, originally created as a joke or meme, has gained serious traction in part due to Musk’s enthusiastic support on social media. Following the announcement, Dogecoin saw a notable 10% increase in value, highlighting the connection between Musk’s business ventures and his political influence.

While the announcement has garnered widespread attention, it has also sparked some skepticism. Critics have pointed out that Musk’s businesses, such as SpaceX, rely on government contracts and taxpayer funding, which could create potential conflicts of interest as he works to reduce government spending. Some have even mocked the idea of Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, both successful businessmen, being tasked with making the government more efficient. Critics argue that the backgrounds of Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in the private sector might not translate well to managing the complexities of a vast government bureaucracy.

What did supporters say?

Supporters, however, argue that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s private-sector experience uniquely qualifies them for the task. Musk’s experience in launching groundbreaking projects like SpaceX and Tesla, combined with Vivek Ramaswamy’s background in biotechnology and his critique of government regulation, are seen by Trump’s team as assets in the effort to cut through governmental inefficiencies.

The new department and its leadership are part of Trump’s broader vision for his second term, which includes a continued focus on reducing government size and spending while promoting private-sector innovation.

As the Trump 2.0 administration prepares for its potential return to power, all eyes will be on how Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy handle the ambitious task of making the U.S. government more efficient. Whether they can succeed in dismantling bureaucracy and cutting waste remains to be seen, but their leadership of DOGE is certainly a move that will keep the public and government insiders watching closely.
